Surreal Worlds from Meret Oppenheim to Frida Kahlo. Goddess, she-devil, doll, fetish, child-woman or wonderful dream-being - the woman was the central theme of surrealist male fantasies. Often only as partners or models, female artists managed to penetrate the circle around the founder of the group of surrealists André Breton. However, a closer look reveals that the participation of female artists in the movement was much greater than generally known and portrayed. The Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is now presenting the female contribution to Surrealism for the first time in a major thematic exhibition. What distinguishes the female artists of Surrealism above all from their male colleagues is the reversal of perspective: often by questioning their own mirror image or taking on different roles, they are on a quest for a (new) female model of identity. Political current events, literature, and non-European myths and religions are also themes that the Surrealist women deal with in their works. With around 260 impressive paintings, works on paper, sculptures, photographs, and films by 30 international women artists, the exhibition presents a diverse spectrum of styles and content. Alongside well-known female artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Frida Kahlo, Meret Oppenheim, Dorothea Tanning and Toyen, numerous unknown, exciting personalities such as Alice Rahon and Kay Sage from more than three decades of Surrealist art can be discovered.
