From one who set out to become an actor and moves in with his grandparents
Jochim Meyerhoff, one of the best actors currently on German stages tells in this book about his years as a young adult. He is unexpectedly accepted at drama school in Munich and moves in with his grandparents in their upper-middle-class villa in Nymphenburg. He becomes a wanderer between worlds. His grandmother was an actress herself and is a dazzling diva, his grandfather is a philosophy professor emeritus, a stern and venerable figure. Their days are structured by adventurous rituals in which alcohol plays an essential role. The contrast between grandparental insanity and ego decay caused by education gives rise to grandiose stories about a helpless hero who discovers cracks, fissures and gaps everywhere. A brilliant read!
