Musical classics in double widescreen sound "I like to be in America," "Tonight," "Somewhere," "Maria" . Who doesn't know and love them, the rousing songs of "West Side Story". Whether the impulsive rhythm, which goes straight to the legs, or the touching love story à la "Romeo and Juliet": With "West Side Story" Leonard Bernstein wrote a piece of music history that is as catchy as it is courageous, as dynamic as it is explosive - and has never lost any of its topicality. Bernstein, along with his librettist Stephen Sondheim, put the raw big-city life with its potential for rust, culture clashes, discrimination and violence on stage. For their immortal masterpiece, we're harnessing the big screen. The original 1961 Oscar-winning film version of "West Side Story" is as fresh as ever with its spirited dance scenes. The Basel Symphony Orchestra, conducted by film music specialist Ernst van Tiel, plays live to the film projection, adding an extra sonorous sound dimension to the big-screen classic.
