Marc Dutroux - he has been in prison for more than 20 years, but his case still represents one of the most enduring crises of the Belgian police and judicial apparatus. He kidnapped several children, abused and murdered them, and yet was able to act unmolested for years.
In Milo Rau's "Five Easy Pieces", seven children confront the audience* with his deeds and their consequences. You hold your breath spellbound as they speak out with ease and precision what seems unspeakable. They slip into all the roles - of perpetrator and victim - and create their own image of reality on the white screen. Scene by scene, they, the potential victims, enact the appropriation of a case in which the children themselves never got to speak. It is challenging, hard to bear, and yet strangely liberating and easy. Can theatre be a place of cathartic grief?
"Five Easy Pieces" is also the name of Stravinsky's piano exercises for children. In Milo Rau's work there are five exercises for our courage to look the abysses of human existence in the eye. Taken by the hand of seven children.
