Florian Hecker (*1975) has created a unique body of work in recent years, which has already been honored internationally with a multitude of exhibitions, performances and concerts. In a consistent manner, his work combines the fields of visual art, music and performance in order to dissolve established boundaries and open up new forms of expression and possibilities of perception in space and time. The exhibition at MMK 3 presents 15 existing and two new works from a period spanning 2004 to 2016. In the main room of MMK 3, the artist has arranged 16 works in a space-specific manner, staged over the duration of an entire exhibition day, in meticulously set choreographies. Parallel to this, the work "Modulator" (2012) will be shown in a separate room. The artist works with synthetic sounds generated by processes of digital as well as electroacoustic signal processing. Compositional developments of post-war modernism and knowledge from audiology and psychoacoustics serve him as starting points for an abstract as well as material work that deliberately eludes linguistic description. Hecker arranges complex compositions as multi-channel installations that accompany exhibition visitors through MMK 3 and create subjective spatial experiences. In doing so, they can experience on their own bodies how individual perception depends on the interplay of acoustic resonance, the sound object and their own sensation. Through active listening, psychological and physical processes are triggered. In his installations, performances and sound recording releases, Florian Hecker is dedicated to the limits and possibilities of the production and reception of sound. He challenges expectations and the habit of perception in the context of contemporary art reception by dramatizing, abstracting and reformulating questions about performance, conceptual art and sculpture through constellations of artificial sound objects. Due to its significant role in techno culture and electronic music, Frankfurt forms the ideal reception context for Florian Hecker's work. As early as 2010, he developed the work "Event, Stream, Object" for the exhibition "Radical Conceptual" at MMK 1, which was subsequently acquired for the collection. In connection with the exhibition, the MMK is cooperating with the Alte Oper Frankfurt: together they produced the new work FAVN (2016), which was performed in the Great Hall of the Alte Oper in the run-up to the exhibition.
