That is also what "Musikfest" means at the Alte Oper: outstanding artists take a stand. Performers react to a central work and show what attitude, what associations, what imaginations it awakens in them. For the Musikfest "Fremd bin ich ..." Francesco Tristano has put his thoughts on Schubert's "Winterreise" into a recital. The pianist calls his programme "(M)eine Winterreise" (A Winter Journey), which has just as much to say about the intellectual content of the "Winter Journey" as it does about its musical content. He juxtaposes his own and other contemporary compositions as well as works of classical modernism with arrangements of selected songs from "Winterreise" in order to merge them into a meditative sound painting. Schubert, for example, he listens to the nocturnal darkness, the sound of the universe or the icy coldness in order to mirror it in the intoxicating tones of a Ravel or Debussy. Tristano deals with Thomas Bernhard's first novel "Frost", which, like "Winterreise", elevates wandering in the outer and inner winter to a motif, in his own composition of the same name.
