From notorious red-light district to hip hotspot
With the inauguration of the main railway station in 1888, Kaiserstraße emerged as a magnificent boulevard, one of the most elegant residential districts in Frankfurt. However, the Bahnhofsviertel changed radically in the second half of the 20th century to a social hotspot, which was characterized by high crime, an open drug scene and a red light milieu with numerous brothels.
Today, the Bahnhofsviertel has a high proportion of offices, retail and restaurants. Due to the multicultural population structure, there are a large number of foreign eateries and grocery stores. Trendy gastronomy with hip shops is also spreading here. While Kaiserstrasse and Münchenerstrasse are becoming increasingly trendy and chic, you will still find a troubled drug mile in the immediately next parallel street, Taunusstrasse.
