The band, founded in 1987, played a mix of garage rock, punk and country. Singer and songwriter Fred Cole, who fronted the band, had been playing in various groups since the age of thirteen. At a concert with
The Weeds in the late 1960s, he met Kathleen "Toody" Conner, who would become his wife and play bass in Dead Moon. A friend of theirs, Andrew Loomis, joined as a drummer.
