From the bourgeois hero life: The Pants / The Snob

Snob [engl, further origin uncertain] der, -s/-s, person who seeks to give himself the appearance of intellectual, cultural superiority through extravagance worn for show, or who wants to be identified with a socially higher class.
Christian Maske would have every reason to be satisfied, because he has just been appointed general manager of an internationally operating mining company. But his ambition goes further: he wants to shake off his bourgeois origins and gain access to higher circles through aristocratic marriage. Or, as he puts it, to bridge "the abyss between heredity and acquired position". Good thing he has enough money to buy the distance he craves: His parents are unceremoniously paid off for their educational expenses and banished from view, as is the mistress who once taught him manners.
Carl Sternheim's comedy "The Snob," first performed in 1914, is part of his series "From Bourgeois Heroic Life," in which, however, the citizens are anything but heroes: In a biting manner, Sternheim engages in the unmasking of the Maske family.
