Since his success at the 1970 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, which he won as the only American to date, pianist Garrick Ohlsson, born in New York in 1948, has ranked among the top ranks of the international piano scene. In Poland he enjoys almost cult status. As a rapidly maturing child prodigy, he was admitted to New York's Juilliard School at the age of 13. Today, he is still considered one of the world's finest Chopin interpreters, but has also followed his famous teacher and role model Claudio Arrau to the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert as well as Romantic composers.
Now his repertoire ranges from Haydn to 21st century music, and includes 80 piano concertos alone. He has also been extraordinarily prolific on CD, including a complete recording of the Beethoven sonatas and the piano works of Frédéric Chopin. Garrick Ohlsson, whose achievements include first prize at the 1966 Busoni Competition, the 1994 Avery Fisher Prize, and a Grammy Award in 2008, is considered one of the finest pianists of his generation.
His interpretations have been characterized as thoroughly American: they are technically of the highest caliber and avoid Romantic mannerisms. Chamber music is also close to his heart. Throughout his career, he has toured with major ensembles such as the Cleveland Quartet, the Emerson String Quartet, and the Tokyo String Quartet.
