Wolfgang Voigt is, by his own description, an "improvable Warholist". Raised and socialized in the pop subculture of the 1970s and 80s, Voigt has since created his very own art-music cosmos from a wide variety of influences including glam rock, pop, jazz, classical, punk, new wave, pop art and New Wild Painting. Known not only as the co-founder of the electronic and techno label Kompakt, as a musician he has also produced some epoch-making works under the pseudonyms Mike Ink, Love Inc, Studio 1 or GAS. With Kompakt, which Voigt calls "lived pop art after the Factory model", he added the Cologne dialect (Cologne Minimal Techno) to the electronic music language (Chicago, Detroit, Berlin, Frankfurt...).
Lately Voigt, who has always seen himself as an interdisciplinary artist, has increasingly devoted himself to the visual arts, where he transfers the aesthetic concepts that find their completion in his music to the level of the visual. Underlying all of his work are two central artistic principles: the loop, as a repetition of minimalist repetitive structures that allow certain patterns to emerge, and sampling, the abstract deformation and condensation of external sound and image sources that are transferred into a new context.
GAS is his audiovisual ambient project of highly condensed classical sound sources, taking its name from its melancholic sound that pours out unmediated, endless and intoxicating in even and sometimes formless structures. GAS is Voigt's vision of a sound body between Schönberg and Kraftwerk, between French horn and bass drum. GAS is Wagner goes Glam Rock and Hansel and Gretel on acid. GAS takes you on a seemingly endless march through the undergrowth - and into the disco - of an imaginary, misty forest.
