In "GIGANTEN /// wie wir jagen" Janna Pinsker and Hanna Steinmair work on the utopia of a solo for two. One body is too few. Janna Pinsker studies choreography and performance, Hanna Steinmair applied theatre studies. In their second collaboration they explore the common communicable of these two positions. The stage clears the space for speculation of all kinds, for a different form of understanding, one is allowed to laugh, one is allowed to wonder and not to understand, one is together with others in this space of speculation and watches oneself doing so. But we are too few. Therefore, we continue beyond the confines of the individual into the development of a shared narrative. We embark on a search for a language that can become corporeal, looking for the possibility of letting bodies speak, of releasing them from their habitual connotations and setting them anew.
In doing so, we explore the question of where to locate the political potential of choreography when one body stands up for many. Feeding the pet, investing money in the stock market, listening to the radio, taking a trip, buying an apartment. We take on the affirmation of cultural symbolism as a strategy of self-empowerment. Fragments from everyday situations, chatter, slang, and fantasies are repeated, shipped into new contexts, and monstrously reassembled. Saying words. Repeat. Giving names, giving names to things. Being washed up. Narratives of characters are called up, briefly touched upon, show themselves, show themselves to the performers, sometimes show more of themselves and disappear again: Field Marshal Hillebrand, a horde of power-house women who control the stock market through immaterial labor, Brookie Busen, a big-game hunter by trade, a specialist in decoding music videos with dance interludes, and many, many more.
The stage becomes a habitat of untold, impossible stories, to which Pinsker and Steinmair make themselves available as starting points and connecting elements. Sometimes the characters appear via movement sequences, come back in gestures or manifest themselves in pitches and speech postures. The performers continually play with the moment of transition, where it is unclear who the action is coming from, who is taking over, and who is ultimately representing whom here. What could have happened, what has happened, or perhaps is happening.
We just did what we wanted today. "GIGANTEN /// how we hunt" gives vent to a language gone wild, occupying and dismantling gestures and movements in the process. Pinsker and Steinmair take to the stage thicket with their recodings to find out what representations are based on, what one cannot break away from, and from what sign language one recomposes. Putting oneself on the line.Just a red herring. Starting a game.
