Ferdinand von Schirach, who was born in Munich in 1964, has won many literary prizes. He lives in Berlin. His most recent publications include Die Herzlichkeit der Vernunft, a volume of conversations with Alexander Kluge, and his most personal book Kaffee und Zigaretten. Our death should not frighten. It should not bother others, it should be self-determined and peaceful. Can we make this decision for ourselves and hope for assistance? So: death by choice instead of death by agony? Until recently, this was not possible under current German law. Section 217 of the Criminal Code of December 2015 prohibited the businesslike promotion of suicide. Doctors, private individuals, dying organisations, carers and lawyers had filed a constitutional complaint against this. The ban - according to the complainants - violates their fundamental rights. Because if the state forbids euthanasia, it denies the right to self-determined dying. On 26 February 2020, the Constitutional Court has now declared this ban unconstitutional. But what does this mean for our future in dealing with life and death? In his second play, Ferdinand von Schirach once again addresses a topic of the highest socio-political relevance.
GOD poses questions concerning human freedom, autonomy and self-determination. Questions that have been variously and passionately debated for years at the nexus of morality, Christianity and politics. As in TERROR, the viewer must examine his or her moral values in light of the human dignity guaranteed in the German constitution and the responsibility of each individual for each person. GOTT wants to initiate a debate that legislators and society must conduct publicly.
