Can humanity overcome the horrors of this earth? Goethe's famous play - a highlight of German classicism. Read through the eyes of today against the backdrop of current world events, this piece of classicism from 1786 proves to be an immensely timely text. Goethe himself came to ponder - while writing his IPHIGENIE - in Apolda. Looking at the starving hosiery workers whom he, as Weimar Minister of War, was obliged to turn out for the Prussian military, the poet asked himself how, in such a presence, he could allow the characters of his drama of the soul to utter such `devilishly humane thoughts'. Apolda is still . and the efforts of his Iphigenia are still necessary and will still be necessary. Directed by Willy Praml
