Dr. Faust is desperate. Despite decades of study and high recognition as a scholar of his time, he is dissatisfied and unsatisfied in his search for the meaning of life. This makes him the perfect plaything for Mephisto, who promptly gives him a makeover and turns his head with feminine charms and excess.
Margarete, called Gretchen, falls for Faust and gets involved in a love affair that will cost her everything she holds dear. Tragedy takes its course as Gretchen, betrayed and jilted by Faust, becomes a child murderer.
