For around two and a half millennia, gold coins were an essential element of the monetary systems of almost all states. Even today, gold fulfils an important function as part of the currency reserves. With 3,374 tonnes, Germany holds the second largest gold reserves after the USA. The Deutsche Bundesbank manages the gold treasure and is now showing a selection of the most remarkable gold bars for the first time in this special exhibition. Among them is one of the oldest bars in the German currency reserves. It was cast in 1917 and delivered in 1956 by the Federal Reserve Bank to the Bank deutscher Länder, the predecessor of the Bundesbank. With the help of the exhibits and the extensive information material, you can trace the development of monetary policy. In the numismatic part of the exhibition, the focus is on particularly significant and long-lived historical gold coin varieties from the Bundesbank's numismatic collection. Visitors can admire the ducat, for example, the world's longest-lived coin of lasting value, which was introduced in 1284 and is still minted today. Exhibits such as these have had a major impact on international payments in their time and have been the focus of monetary policy. In many cases, they have influenced the coinage of other states.
