The "Winterreise" is like a way of the cross, Günther Groissböck confesses: "You go through it, you are struck down and suffer with it." He is convinced that he is able to give "Winterreise" a very special colouring with his voice: "For the desolation and gloom of the songs, a bass fits well", says Groissböck. One has to agree with him, for as seldom as one hears the "Winterreise" sung by a bass, it is delightful how this vocal register, full of grounding, underlines the impressive power of the songs. On the opera stages Günther Groissböck has been one of the high-flyers in recent years. His stage presence, however, is sheer overwhelming. He creates his roles with heart and soul, while at the same time exploring the boundaries of the role in order to come up with new interpretations that are fresh and contemporary. Groissböck's clear timbre and agile voice leading are at least as predestined for the art song. In the music festival "Fremd bin ich ..." he is the godfather for the performance of "Winterreise" in its original form.
