The flickering images of distant trouble spots are omnipresent in our everyday lives. Via our smartphones, laptops, news screens at the train station... Incessantly, we become witnesses to the effects of a globally networked economic system. Whether we like it or not, we cannot escape these images. Do we bear responsibility for the suffering at the other end of the world? Do we feel guilty? Or are we too quick to reduce those affected to their role as victims? Dries Verhoeven twists the axes of vision in "Guilty Landscapes". For in his video installation, the people behind the news from the other side of the world look us back in the eye.
One on one - an eye-to-eye encounter. Poetic, confounding and deeply personal. In 2016, Verhoeven's debauched funeral ceremonies challenged Wiesbaden*ers to a ritual of mourning for the values of our community. This year he arranges an encounter with the hinterland of globalization and asks the open question about the subtle politics of media images.
