Great events cast their shadows ahead. That's why, ten days before the opening of the Musikfest, the Alte Oper is offering a first glimpse of that theme which will dominate the Alte Oper's programme for two weeks in September - Ludwig van Beethoven's "Eroica". The concert with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra will not only mark the start of the Musikfest, but will also be held under the motto "European Cultural Days of the European Central Bank". In previous years, these have focused on a single country of the European Union - but in 2019, Europe itself is the theme. And who better to represent the spirit, harmony and future of Europe than the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, which is made up of the continent's most talented young musicians who qualify for the orchestra projects every year in a rigorous selection process. Under the direction of Herbert Blomstedt, the orchestra will interpret not only the central work of the Musikfest, Beethoven's "Eroica", but also Strauss' symphonic poem "Death and Transfiguration" as well as Mahler's Rückert Lieder, which in Christian Gerhaher arguably find one of the best interpreters currently conceivable.
