His rich, honeyed vocals and detailed guitar figures are always at the center of every song by Habib Koité.
This is how the music of the world music star, who was born in Senegal and moved to Mali with his family at an early age, was characterized early on. "His reputation as a guitarist is almost mystical, combining rock and classical techniques with Malian tunings that make the guitar sound like a kora or N'goni," the prestigious New York Times wrote in his pedigree. Since Koité comes from a griot family, the art of storytelling was practically in his cradle. His grandfather played the spit-necked lute Kamele N'Goni, and his mother sang at festivals, where he accompanied her on guitar, developing his own style - inspired by the techniques of the region's lute and harp instruments. "No one actually taught me how to sing and play guitar," Koité once explained. "I just watched my family and I guess that rubbed off." And so now he tours with his "hypnotic tapestry of sound", plays rousing concerts and, as a true charismatic, creates the extremely subtle fusion of all Malian nuances with soul, blues as well as flamenco reminiscences and modern Afro groove to create a new sound picture.
