Hardly any film in the past months of Hafenkino got under our skin like this. This may not have surprised those who knew the novel (American Pastoral by Philipp Roth) before. The United States during the Vietnam War. In the midst of a supposedly perfect small town and family ambiance, a bomb explodes. Young Merry falls under suspicion, disappears, is desperately sought by her father. We won't tell you any more. Just this: Ewan McGregor (remember him? Mark, in Trainspotting) succeeded in his directorial debut with a sublime adaptation of the novel, which consistently leaves out a large part of the book in order to concentrate on its elexir - the relationship of the oh-so-successful parents to their daughter, who is slipping away from them. Incredible acting performances also make the film version a masterpiece - think Valorie Curry as Merry's co-star trying to seduce her father... unforgettable!
