Did you know how dramatic Astrid Lindgren's youth was? We didn't. At first, her childhood in the countryside was carefree. When she becomes pregnant unmarried at 18, she flees the scandal to Copenhagen, where she gives birth to her son Lasse. In order to keep her head above water financially, Astrid has to work in Stockhholm, leaving Lasse with her foster mother Marie. When she falls ill, she brings him to live with her, but Lasse has long since grown accustomed to Marie.
