Nadine Labaki's A Song for Nour had made it from winter harbour cinema to open air selection in 2017 and deservedly found a sizeable audience there, so our interest automatically turns to her new work, which is also preceded by the best reviews. The story speaks for itself: the estimated twelve-year-old Zain sits in a Beirut juvenile detention centre, from where he takes his parents to court - for having brought him into the world, into a chaotic, warlike, child-hostile one. He relentlessly describes his dramatic circumstances to the judge, leaving out no details, no matter how juicy, that neatly compromise the adults - for example, the sale of Zain's beloved sister Sahar. If you now fear a maudlin film on the verge of poverty kitsch and bland good-or-evil characteers, you don't know Nadine Labaki.
