Hans Traxler, arguably one of the most broadly effective satirists Germany has ever produced, will read from his latestwork "Mama, warum bin ich kein Huhn?" on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 7:30 pm. In 33 chapters, 33 colorful illustrations and his typical laconic-comic style, Hans Traxlers captures his childhood memories. Growing up in a Bohemian village in the 1930s, Traxler experienced a childhood on the farm: with a mother who played the church organ, a father who was a gendarmerie post commander by profession and who walked behind the canopy with the monstrance on Ascension Day, and his big brothers who showed him how to catch trout with a butterfly net. This idyll was over when the German Wehrmacht marched in in 1938 and the Second World War began a year later. Until the end of the war, the author describes his experiences anecdotally, vividly, wittily, and sensitively.
