The harvest festival is one of the most beautiful traditions in Hessenpark. Since the early days of the open-air museum, the end of summer has been celebrated annually with harvest and craft demonstrations, food and drink.
At the threshing hall in the North Hesse assembly, museum guests will experience machine threshing with a threshing box and steam engine from October 1 to 3. At the Emstal-Sand farmstead, a historic tractor powers a pin thresher and a wind sweep, while threshing flails are wielded with pure muscle power. All demonstrations show the threshing of the grains from the ears of grain. Several ladder trucks loaded with grain sheaves are threshed in this way every day. During the grain cleaning with wind sweep and worfel you can see how the chaff is separated from the grain. The straw from the threshed sheaves is not only used as bedding in the barn. Straw ropes can be made from old types of grain with long stalks with the help of a historical machine. In the past, these served as an inexpensive substitute for rope. Today they can be bound to wreaths and used as autumnal decoration.
The churches are autumnally decorated, in the house of God from Ederbringhausen a harvest thanksgiving devotion takes place on Saturday and Sunday. Children may manufacture their own apple juice with small hand presses, swing the flail and prove with the pumpkin or turnip carving their manual skill. In addition, the autumn market attracts with a wide range of homemade handicrafts: knitted and sewn, decorations for home and garden, jewelry, leather goods and much more. Regional delicacies such as cheese or mushroom specialties, honey from the direct marketer, all kinds of fine from the pumpkin, liqueurs and jams round off the offer.
Also for the physical well-being is provided: the potato steaming column is in use and produces freshly steamed Hessenpark food potatoes, which are offered with cottage cheese, green sauce and herring salad.
