"Mozart y Mambo" with Sarah Willis, horn
In 2007, a monument to Mozart was unveiled in Havana to celebrate his 250th birthday. Pepe Mendéz conducted an ensemble of student friends for the occasion. Johannes Honsig-Erlenburg, the president of the Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg, was present at this concert and was so impressed that he asked Pepe Mendéz about possibilities of support. Thus the Havana Lyceum Orchestra was born. Since then, the orchestra and Pepe Mendéz have developed into an internationally acclaimed ensemble, professionalized with the help of the German Balthasar Neumann Ensemble.
The development was supported by Sarah Willis, the well-known principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic. She was so inspired by the energy and passion of the Cuban musicians that Sarah Willis recorded the project "Mozart y Mambo" with them in 2020.
