The Hessentag has been around since 1961 and was created by the then Prime Minister Georg August Zinn. The original idea was to bring immigrants, especially displaced persons, closer to the state of Hesse in its diversity and to give them a feeling of home. In the early days, the focus was especially on cultivating customs.
Today, Hessentag has transformed into a modern festival for young and old. The ten-day festival offers something for everyone. Large concerts in the Hessentag arena, smaller concerts in the marquee and in the Hessenpalace, exhibition areas of the Federal Armed Forces and the Federal Police with stages, the wine village, a children's land, the state exhibition, the exhibition "Der Natur auf der Spur", the hr-Treff and much more. Each organizing city also has the chance to present itself to its guests with its special features.
With an average of one million guests, the Hessentag is now Germany's largest state festival. We are delighted that the Hessentag will be held in Rüsselsheim am Main from 9 to 18 June 2017. We have chosen "MAIN Rüsselsheim - OUR Hesse" as our motto. This motto will also be the program: The Hessentag in Rüsselsheim will take place predominantly at and on the water.
