String Quintet in G major op. 111

In Anton Webern's Six Bagatelles op. 9 from 1911, Schoenberg's later elaborated twelve-tone technique already announces itself. Widmann's ensuing quartet movement from the opera Absences is not unlike Webern's, given the aphoristic brevity of its tonally expressive tonal gestures. In the chronology of the work's genesis, the quartet movement from the opera Absences stands at the very beginning, since Widmann composed it when he was only seventeen. In August 1901 - ten years before Webern's Bagatelles - Gustav Mahler had composed his five songs after Friedrich Rückert, from which Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen is taken. Annette Reisinger has written an arrangement for string quartet.
Loneliness, the rejection of the world as a false pretence and immersion in the self: These are the themes underlying this song. The concert will be framed by two highlights of the chamber music literature, the String Quintet in C Major, K. 515 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the String Quintet in G Major, Op. 11 by Johannes Brahms.
