Since its founding in 1996, the Zurich casalQuartett has developed into one of Switzerland's most internationally renowned quartets, performing over 1,500 concerts throughout the world. Its stylistic diversity and vital stage presence are exceptional features.

Trained with the Carmina Quartet in Zurich, the Alban Berg Quartet in Cologne and with Walter Levin in Basel, important artistic impulses came from collaborations with Martha Argerich, Clemens Hagen, Patricia Kopatchinskaya, Sol Gabetta, Emma Kirkby, Benjamin Schmid, Maurice Steger, Christoph Prégardien, Khatia Buniatishvili, Nuria Rial, Regula Mühlemann and many others. In addition to cultivating its core repertoire, the casalQuartett places the greatest importance on emotional closeness to its audiences, the involvement of artistic partners from various fields, and the conceptual design of its programs.

Members of the ensemble also implement this vision of innovative, lively, and emotional concertizing in their own festivals and concert series in Switzerland and Germany. The string quartet is one of the most versatile of genres, succeeding in stylistic excursions into 17th century music, the world of tango nuevo, jazz and the latest compositions, as well as in expanding the dimensions of sound and content through guest musicians, actors and through dance and literature.

The first half of the 19th century is rich in composer biographies that come to a premature halt. Thus, it seems, early Romanticism at times tragically created its own idols with its evocation of the sentimental between love and near death. Whereas in the case of Mendelssohn and Schubert the legacy contains a wealth of masterpieces, in view of which it seems almost blasphemous to still suspect potential for increase, the few tangible compositions in the case of Arriaga and Burgmüller are like a glittering promise of great artistic personalities, the redemption of which never took place.
