Charleston, the port city in the state of South Carolina, is now one of the ten most dangerous cities in the USA - and was probably not a place of pure joy in the early 20th century either. Century, it was no place of pure joy. The settlement of Catfish Row, however, the ghetto of the African Americans there, has made it to the opera stage, to the venue of George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess". Catfish Row is not a good address, but it is sometimes very affectionate - for example when a child is sung to sleep with "Summertime". Gershwin himself had studied urban life and the pulse of a metropolis a few years earlier: He was "An American in Paris," letting himself drift through the Seine metropolis for two months between rush hour on the Champs Elysees and the red-light ambience at Montmartre. "It is my intention to reproduce the impressions of an American traveler strolling through Paris, listening to the street noise and absorbing the French atmosphere" - though it was precisely the street noise that he intended to reproduce as much as possible in its original sound by having real taxi horns imported to the United States. The first work of the evening whets the appetite for the new season: " Samuel Barber's "Toccata Festiva" marks the first time that star organist Iveta Apkalna will be the new "Artist in Residence."
