Whether on the smartphone, in the newspaper or on the computer - every day we perceive the world through a flood of photographs. Numerous artists from the MMK collection have dealt with media images and reinterpreted them in their works. In doing so, they both reflect on political topics that have been disseminated in the press through images, deconstruct the authentic character of press photographs, or create images on topics that could not previously be illustrated.
With the exhibition "Image Profile", the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst questions how the media have shaped our ability to see images. The collection presentation at MMK 2 shows a diverse spectrum of current forms of expression from socio-political reportage photography to aspects of subjective, conceptual or staged photography.
With its technical implications, its pictorial possibilities and its documentary character, photography has always been one of the most significant media of modernity. It is now impossible to imagine contemporary art without photography. Today, photographic works comprise around half of the MMK's extensive collection, which consists of over 5000 works.
Thematically, the selection of works for this exhibition primarily circles around the social crises of our present day, ranging along current war theaters in the work of Anja Niedringhaus to Larry Clark's intimate look at his own generation against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, as exemplified by his series Tulsa, to the question of the sheer limitless technical manipulability of reality in the work of Thomas Demand's spatial installation Klause I-V.
Among others, major works by Kader Attia, Christian Boltanski, David Claerbout, Larry Clark, Thomas Demand, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Ryuji Miyamoto, Santu Mofokeng, Anja Niedringhaus, Inge Rambow, Dayanita Singh and Abisag Tüllmann - all artists represented with extensive groups of works in the MMK collection - are on view.
