500 years of Reformation - a memorable anniversary!
But how do you celebrate an event that seems so distant and abstract?
It is possible by taking a closer look at the everyday life of the people of that time.
Few of their writings have been handed down. However, we still know their songs and hymns, which are just as much about people's everyday worries and hardships as they are today.
Martin Luther's hymn of praise, "Mitten wir im Leben sind," points the way on our journey back in time to the 16th century, where you will encounter lustful joy and exuberant merriment as well as endless hardship and painful misery.
The apparent parallels to modern times - just think of the forbidden infidelity or the attraction of men increased by wealth - make you smile, while statements on topics like nature and home, to which you have a different relationship in your modern mobile society, make you think.
The universal feelings sung about, such as homesickness, parting mourning, longing and, of course, love, make you forget the great span of time and lead you right into the midst of life, and that of 1517 as much as your own.
After their successful program "Bacharkaden", the two top ensembles Calmus and the lautten Compagney, who always find new angles in addition to their musicality, skill and stylistic confidence, have come together again to create a vivid painting of the Reformation era with a great deal of joy in making music and sparkling creativity.
In addition to many original compositions, this has resulted in a number of snappy new arrangements that make the 16th century "Swing".
Calmus joins forces with the lautten Compagney Berlin to follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther and take aim at the music that Luther wrote and that surrounded him.
Souled and pious, but also coarse, humorous and playful, original works as well as new, modern and jazzy arrangements are heard.
And so awakens the colorful hustle and bustle of 1517 - in the midst of life!
