Seemingly familiar features such as form, volume, boundaries, emptiness and structures form the space and thus provide orientation. But how are these elements of a third dimension represented in drawing and printmaking, that is, in the surface? This question is addressed by the exhibition "Into the Third Dimension. Spatial Concepts on Paper from the Bauhaus to the Present" in the Städel Museum's Prints and Drawings Department. On view are selected works by 13 artists, including Lucio Fontana, Eduardo Chillida, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Giò Pomodoro, Blinky Palermo, James Turrell and Michael Riedel. The show starts with the geometric compositions of El Lissitzky and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy from 1923 and leads up to prints of contemporary conceptual art. Thus, lithographs with constructivist representations of perspective meet embossed prints that push into space. Slits that open up imaginative spaces are juxtaposed with designs for wall works. Prints evoking the object-like by artists of Minimal Art, Spatial Art and Light Art are juxtaposed with chalk drawings, folds and collages by 20th century sculptors. In addition, to allow for a variety of spatial experiences, the prints and drawings on view will be combined with sculptures so that the different dimensions can enter into a stimulating dialogue.
