2016 marks the centenary of the Irish Revolution. That means 100 years of Irish independence and the existence of the Irish Republic. The revolution - or Easter Rising - was led by Irish writers, poets, trade unionists and patriots. Irish language, Irish music and Gaelic sports were the cement among this motley bunch of idealists who gave their lives for freedom. Now, 100 years later, Irish folk and Gaelic are more alive than ever. They are simply the Irish DNA - and what better way to show it than at the 43rd edition of the IFF? 100 years of Irish independence, however, raises question marks. What did the rebels actually give their lives for? While Ireland is no longer an English colony, it is ruled by the IMF, Troika, shadow banks and hedge funds. 100 years ago the rebels could hide in the mountains or bogs. In these days of Google and total surveillance, there is no hiding place left on earth. To mark the great anniversary, the Irish government will do what all governments are wont to do: put on a big jubilant event that will be free of critical accompaniment. So it is the job of art and culture to hold up a mirror to society. The bands invited to the IFF will interpret and comment on songs from Easter Rising. Unusual and alternative perspectives will not go amiss. At the IFF beats the true heart of Ireland and the little people. We are the V(F)olk!
