He describes himself only conditionally as a former Thomaner: as a child Gotthold Schwarz was admitted to the choir and its boarding school, but was so homesick that his parents had to pick him up again after three quarters of a year. Since 2016, the trained bass-baritone has been responsible for the fate of the choir himself - as the 17th Thomaskantor after Johann Sebastian Bach, he stands in a total of more than 800 years of important Leipzig tradition. Of course, this still includes the cultivation of repertoire that was created especially for the St. Thomas Boys Choir - such as Bach's Christmas Oratorio, an integral part of the cultural history not only of Leipzig's St. Thomas Church, but of the entire Western world. During Advent, the St. Thomas Boys Choir will perform the first three cantatas of this classic work of music history at the Alte Oper.
