If, after a one and a half hour concert, the audience has the feeling that it only took five minutes, when the auditorium is immersed in a world all of its own, where everything external, similar to the cinema, fades out and you are drawn into the spell of the stories being told on stage, then the artist has done everything right. Jan Felix May's music is full of small and big surprises; you never know what's going to happen next and you already suspect that there's about to be another twist to take the song in a completely different direction.
It's almost impossible to pin down a genre, but there's no doubt that its origins lie in jazz. Then still a schoolboy, Jan Felix May studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Mainz as a young student and began his bachelor's degree directly afterwards. Since he discovered his father's piano at the age of three, the now 24-year-old pianist and composer has been following his passion. He himself calls his music "Jazz / Electro / Rock", but to be on the safe side he recommends everyone to come to a concert to experience it live and make up their own mind. You rarely hear a four-four time signature - the compositions are all heavily influenced by odd time signatures, which become more and more extreme and complicated as the program progresses. With such complexity, writing music that people can remember and hum along to melodies after the concert is no easy feat, but one of the pianist's greatest musical goals.
His music has taken him to festivals such as the Palatia Jazz Festival and jazz clubs like Jazzkeller Frankfurt. In 2016, he was awarded the soloist prize at the 8th European Burghausen Young Jazz Prize as part of the Burghausen International Jazz Week. After recordings last November at Studio de Meudon in Paris, the artist's first album will be released by Deltamusic on October 5, 2018, featuring Norwegian singer Torun Eriksen and voice actor Christian Brückner (German voice of Robert De Niro), among others. The choice of guest stars shows what is important to the young musician: versatility and innovation. To create his own language and sound world, which has not yet existed in this form, is one of the reasons for him to go on stage and make music.
