Clear statement: Wynton Marsalis is one of the most important representatives of classical jazz. The trumpeter, who has won nine Grammys, still feels connected to the roots of jazz in his work, to the blues, to swing, to the big band sound, to the sound of the city of New Orleans, where he was born into a musical family in 1961. There can be no progress without a sense of tradition, the US-American, who comes from a distinguished family of musicians, is convinced. "When you are part of a tradition, it gives you knowledge. You have to find your personality through the flow of tradition."
A week before his 60th birthday, Wynton Marsalis returns to the Alte Oper Frankfurt for a JAZZnight on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 - it will be the trumpeter's first appearance at the venue in two decades. For his 8 p.m. concert in the Great Hall, Marsalis will bring the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra, the ensemble he himself has led since 1995 and with which he intensively cultivates the living legacy of jazz.
With performances both at the namesake Lincoln Center in New York City and around the world, educational programs for young people, and radio broadcasts, Marsalis and his orchestra share a mission: "to entertain, enrich, and expand a global community for jazz through performance, education, and promotion." To that end, Marsalis and his 15 fellow musicians* are always devoting themselves to new programs, both at Lincoln Center and on their worldwide performances, that span the gamut from Louis Armstrong to Duke Ellington to Wayne Shorter, but also include quite a few newly commissioned compositions.
