Leoš Janáček eavesdropped his music on language and folk song. With "Jenufa" he experienced his late international breakthrough as an opera composer. The expressive orchestral sound narrates the rural expanses, while the concentrated story deals with cornered people.
The paths of life in Jenufa's village community are inescapably mapped out. The young woman must stand her ground between two unfortunate men and against the sexton, her overbearing foster mother. In order to maintain her social standing, the latter kills Jenufa's illegitimate child after birth. With "Jenufa" Janáček has created his great masterpiece.
