Angel, a thirty-year-old bicycle courier from New York, has already lost his best friend to a cult years ago. Now he's on his second night in custody awaiting trial for shooting the cult leader in the backside. He kneels, alone and panicked, and tries to say a prayer he can't remember, addressed to a God he's anything but forgotten. Angel's public defender, Mary Jane, is relatively young but already quite disillusioned. Suddenly, the cult leader dies on the operating table, and Angel is suddenly charged with murder. Regularly beaten by other inmates and one day discovered unconscious in his cell with a bed sheet around his neck, he is transferred to a special block where he spends 23 hours a day in solitary confinement in a cage. His guard is a brutally direct judicial officer who knows only black and white - and no grey whatsoever. Away from this, his only human contact is the lone inmate in the cage next to him.Lucius has found God over the course of his incarceration, and his influence fundamentally changes Angel's life and the course of his trial.
