Jil Sander is one of the most influential fashion designers of her generation. In her first solo exhibition in a museum worldwide, Jil Sander uses expansive multimedia installations and tableaux to present the impact of her design approach on the aesthetics, materials and form of fashion and product design, architecture and garden art. The presentation, which could hardly be more multifaceted, makes visible the inventiveness and creative power of a designer who is concerned with highlighting a person's personality. Jil Sander's importance as a fashion designer rests on the extraordinary sensitivity with which she sensed currents of the times and changes in society and developed new, modern forms from them. Her purism changed notions of beauty and identity. Her design principles - harmony of proportion, thoughtful three-dimensionality of designs, understatement and dynamic elegance - always remained the same, yet found new expression in each collection. In preparing for the exhibition, Jil Sander has turned to the past for the first time. This is a new experience for her, whose interest has always been in what is yet to come. The result of more than one and a half years of intensive examination of the possibilities of an exhibition is revealed in the interaction of architecture, colour, light, film, sound, text, photography, fashion and art in dynamic spatial compositions. The result is not a retrospective overview exhibition, but a new, current body of work that becomes an aesthetic event through Jil Sander's presence. Thematically, the exhibition, curated by Matthias Wagner K in close collaboration with Jil Sander, is divided into the areas of catwalk, backstage, studio, fashion collections, accessories, cosmetics, fashion photography and campaigns, fashion and art, architecture and garden art. It occupies the entire museum building on around 3,000 square metres of exhibition space.
