Seven times the jazz magazine Down Beat voted him Jazz Guitarist of the Year, in 2012 John McLaughlin was honored with the Frankfurt Music Prize - for a body of work that, according to the jury, "has always distinguished itself by respect and openness to many other directions, forms of expression and cultures, rather than by genre boundaries and dogmatism." The style-defining world musician has recorded well over 20 solo albums, dozens more with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and his band Shakti, as well as with Miles Davis, Carlos Santana, Bill Evans, Paco de Lucía, Al di Meola and countless other notable artists.
"The 4th Dimension" is the name of the band project he launched in 2009 together with Gary Husband, Ranjit Barot and Etienne M'Bappe. The four top musicians from different cultures and traditions know how to use their respective musical roots profitably without abandoning the spontaneity of jazz.
