The Scot likes it quite drastic. "Kill 'em all" is the name of his 2018 novel. John Niven, whom Rolling Stone quite affectionately calls the "king of cultivated derailment", lets his "hero" Steven Stelfox, whom he introduced in 2008 in his cult novel "Kill Your Friends", adapted by Owen Harris, continue to walk over corpses without moral qualms in the era of Trump, Brexit and fake news. "And the climate of 'American carnage' - of populism, sheer greed and big lies - plays to his advantage," reads the announcement for the book. Formerly a successful A&R record company executive, then a ruthless casting show judge, Nivens, the 27-year-old protagonist, indulges himself in a sedate jet-set life but - when boredom plagues him - appears as a music industry consultant.
An old friend's artist, Lucius Du Pre, is the most successful pop star on earth. Well, he was the most successful pop star on earth. Meanwhile, he's a hopeless junkie and unpredictable sex monster. To recoup the insane advances, a worldwide comeback tour is planned. But to do that, he'd have to get back in shape. And there's also a blackmail attempt to avert - a video of compromising scenes that must never be released to the public. "No one combines maximum crudeness with political stance as smartly as John Niven," wrote the Berliner Zeitung. He is joined on his reading tour by his German colleague Thorsten Nagelschmidt.
