Schiller's Sturm-und-Drang play "Kabale und Liebe" tells of the love between Ferdinand and Luise. Actually two young people who do not ask for origin or bank statement, but want to celebrate their youth and their love. However, not only their parents are against the union, but also the society opposes the marriage of the noble young man and the daughter of a music teacher.
A politically charged Romeo and Juliet version and indictment of courtly arrogance, a rigid estates system, and a corrupt society more willing to accept disaster than the happiness of its children in order to avoid challenging the imbalance of circumstances. Schiller's "bürgerliches Trauerspiel" is one of the great classics of German drama.
