At the latest since his sensational presentation at the last documenta, Kader Attia (*1970) has been one of the leading international artists of his generation. The MMK, Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main, is now dedicating a comprehensive solo exhibition to Attia. Growing up as the child of Algerian immigrants in the banlieues of Paris, his experiences in two different cultural milieus form the basis for his artistic practice. In the exhibition at MMK, he explores the far-reaching effects of Western cultural hegemony on non-Western cultures against the backdrop of our globalized present. Attia's works, as aesthetically impressive as they are ethically challenging, address the concept of "repair," which he has been exploring for many years and first fully explored in his magnificent widely acclaimed installation "The Repair from Occident to Extra-Occidental Cultures" at documenta 13 (2012). For the exhibition "Sacrifice and Harmony" at MMK 1, Kader Attia is developing a new group of works that continues his concept of reappropriation and repair. In doing so, he also turns his gaze to religiously and politically motivated sacrificial rituals. Originally intended to harmonize orders, Kader Attia sees them in contemporary societies as a main instrument of the politics of fear, destroying peaceful coexistence and social harmony.
