Wiesbaden around 1900. Hidden in the middle of the flourishing glamorous city with its elegant spa life lies the Katzeloch, a workers' settlement with its dirty backyards, cramped apartments and workshops. It is the home of Martha and Karl, who would like to escape from their miserable lives, but cannot.
In their search for a spark of happiness, they meet again in a dive where they sing and party to beer and cheap wine. Their fate changes abruptly the moment an elegant guest strays into the pub and turns their world completely upside down. Drawn by the once-in-a-lifetime chance that their fate could change in one fell swoop, they fall for a diabolical plan.
Katz & Maus - Eine Milieustudie by the Freie Theater Wiesbaden is a play about appearances, being and love during the Wilhelmine era, projected into a single evening in the lives of the protagonists. Like a morality tale, it subtly tells of the longings and contradictions of three people who could not be more different and whose urge for freedom becomes an ominously explosive mixture.
