Hollywood, a place of longing? This applied only to a limited extent to those composers whom the Nazi regime had driven out of Europe. They had to exchange their artistic home for a new, unknown world. For many of them, Vienna was their old home - and the Viennese late Romanticism of Gustav Mahler had shaped their musical language. It is no coincidence that Hollywood sounds like Vienna and its late romantic symphonies, which, with their composers, have found their way into and further developed American film music. Frank Strobel, who is well versed in the exciting intersection of concert hall and cinema, immerses us in the sound world of the 1930s, which for Europe was a dramatic artistic bleeding, but in Hollywood brought undreamed-of new possibilities. The audiovisual highlight of the first evening of our focus festival "Exodus to Hollywood" will be a short version of "King Kong", for which Max Steiner provided the soundtrack. He is credited with having completely redesigned the interplay of image and sound from the spirit of Viennese musical life around 1900.
