Messer Chups were founded in 1998 by the Russian St. Petersburg-born guitarist Oleg Gitarkin, initially as a side project of his "industrial-psycho-hardcore"band Messer für Frau Müller and as a duo: he was assisted by alternating but always impressive female musicians - including a direct descendant of the Russian physics professor Leon Theremin, who invented the eponymous electronic musical instrument in the 1920s and sparked a musical revolution. By now Messer Chups are a foursome and together the guitarist, now performing under the name Oleg Gitaracula, and the stunningly sexy and distinctive bassist and singer Zombierella, along with guitarist Intoxica and drummer Rockin' Eugene, undertake an exceedingly wild ride through the trash culture of the 1950s and 60s. On Messer Chups, surf music, rock'n'roll, rockabilly and horror punk meet the soundtracks of cheap horror movies and other B-movies and, right off the bat, lounge music and trashy science fiction electronica. Imagine: Ed Wood meets Davie Allen & The Arrows, Dick Dale meets Russ Meyer, The Cramps use an analogue Soviet synthesizer and The Trashmen even a theremin - this adventurous mix is described by Messer Chups themselves as "post-easy-listening", while others describe it as bizarre, occult, criminal, sexy, vampiresque or simply forbidden.
