In fact, Kreidler had already finished a new LP before European Song. Studio sessions in Mexico City in early 2016 evolved into an album that was in many ways lighter, more minimalist and playful than the band's work in recent years. Then came the shock of the US election. And in an instant, everything that was going wrong in the world condensed. Kreidler's originally planned new album felt more than wrong for this universe. A new album was needed. And it had to be done now.
The band postponed the mastering date by a week and met in a studio in Hilden. The outside circumstances provided no shortage of inspiration. And Kreidler had just finished a mini-tour and was well-rehearsed. Thomas Klein's stringent drumming meshed with Detlef Weinrich's stubbornly nervous electronic sequences, the brutalist opulence of Andreas Reihse's synthetic soundscapes complemented Alexander Paulick's measured flourishes and rhythmic guitar and bass work. As is actually usually the case with Kreidler, there are no vocals on European Song. Abstract-voice-like sounds do, however, which make you think of a panicked crowd or a chorus of hooligans. Repetition and modulation are the ying and yang in Kreidler's dark | bunker | pop -hybrid.The quality feature of the perfect interplay between man and machine results from the combination of shared experience and blind trust in the moment.
