The special exhibition "Landscape and Sculpture" presents numerous drawings and sculptures by the renowned artist, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday and was, among other things, awarded the Max Slevogt Medal a few weeks ago. His works can be discovered in the museum's permanent exhibition as unusual interventions. At the same time, these provide an overview of his entire and extremely varied oeuvre.
An emphasis is placed on the drawings, some of which are in color, which make up a considerable number in the overall oeuvre of Eberhard Linke (b. 1937), but which in previous exhibitions have been perceived only incidentally as a complement to the sculptures. This time, these will be given equal importance in terms of numbers.
The majority of the drawings are landscapes made on many trips to Italy and France. They are independent expressions of art, predominantly created out of an interest in sculptural landscape formations, without being sketches for sculptures. They reflect the structures that are also recognizable as characteristics in the terracottas: Tectonics and layering, fractures and fissures, signs of dynamic processes. Alongside these are studies of nature and illustrative themes such as "Mönchsphantasien" on Eberbach Monastery. This cycle can be seen in the exhibition rooms of the Graphische Sammlung from 7 November.
In the sculptural work, the human figure and landscape structures are equally important. They are the basis and combine in the sculptures. At the same time, the small formats are usually bozzetti, designs for larger realizations. A salient feature is their dynamism with the simultaneity of preceding and following states of movement, associated with the moment of transformation and change. The exhibition thus also provides an overview of more than 50 years of sculptural work by Eberhard Linke in bronze and in terracotta, created in sculptural hollow construction.
