In Chile La Brigida Orquesta is considered a supergroup. A term actually associated with the rock scene of the early seventies. All eleven musicians of the jazz-rap ensemble have already earned their merits in the most diverse formations. The two founding members, pianist and composer Gabo Paillao and rapper Matiah Chinaski, alone are considered two historical figures in the South American country's rap fusion scene, which has only fueled the orchestra's popularity. They have promptly been declared a sensation on Chile's urban scene.
On their first album, "Corte Elegante," the domestic media also discovered influences from the blackest jazz currents such as Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis in this fusion's orchestrations, which are complemented by Matiah Chinaski's improvisational and vocal skills.
His rapping style features versatility and the ability to rap over very different genres of music. "The orchestral format is powerful," Gabo Paillao is quoted as saying. Because that's what it takes to get heard in a culture like Chile.
